Cinecultist Hates the Angelika

Apparently, so do many other film-going New Yorkers. The Times reports.

Cinecultist wants to know, will you go out of your way to avoid seeing a movie at the Angelika? Do you still think it has some indie cachet (apparently Drew Barrymore, Zoe Saldana and Maggie Gyllenhaal do, we've spotted them there)? Will the renovations draw you back/keep you happy? Tell us in the comments.

yeah, i wouldn't go to the angelika unless i absolutely had to. besides, the sunshine is around the corner from me and walter reade is free. all the complaints the article cites are true. also, trying to watch a foreign, subtitled film at the angelika is terrible, you have to move your head up and down to read the subtitles AND watch the film itself.

I LOATHE the Angelika. I won't go unless I absolutely have to. And the subway rumble actually did help the first half of Irreversible.

I feel a little nostaligia for the Angelika despite totally hating it, since it was one of the first places I visited when I came to New York to look at school. Although watching a quasi-art-porn (Wayne Wang's Map of the World) with a very sketchy guy in my row should have been an indication to something untoward about the theater.
